To my big brother in heaven on Christmas Eve, I miss you. I long for the Christmas Eve's when we all frantically try to get our showers and ready for midnight mass. Twelve people to get ready and only 3 showers!! Those were the best of times. We would return to the house, friends and family in tow for the best middle of the night breakfast on the whole east coast. Dad would be in the kitchen and the smell of fried eggs and bacon would surround him. We would sing Christmas carols and you would always do some sort of impression. You had the gift of humor and always shared it with each of us. We would all exchange gifts the next morning, a little tired from the long night before. When we were really young, we younger four would bound down the stairs with excitment to see what dear St.Nick had left for us. I think that the older brothers and sisters home from college probably wished we had slept in a little longer. Those were such happy times. My heart aches for them. Christmas will never be the same, but it will become easier over time as we need to help foster that same feeling that we had, in our own children. We were truly blessed Michael to have you in our family, watch over us and help to ease our sorrowful hearts during this the celebration of the birth of our Lord. For because of him we will all see you again heaven. I love you big brother.
Forever missing you, Colleen

I would like to take this time to thank the Lynch family for everything they have done and to thank Michael for his heroism on 911.
Although I did not know Michael as well as most people in Throggs Neck, I do remember him from seeing him at the Clipper and other neighborhood "haunts". I actually knew Thomas more than Michael, and went to high school with Stephanie. I have also come to know Michael's parents Jack and Kathleen as well as his Aunt Agnes and Uncle Pat through the blood drive and other activities at Saint Frances. I wish all of you love and peace in the new year and thank you all again for all that you have done in support of the WTC victims and the community of Throggs Neck.

I'd like to clarify one point I made in my earlier post. THE 343 HOUSE will be open to ALL SURVIVORS of Line of Duty Deaths while in service to F.D.N.Y. This, of course would include Stephanie. I hope I didn't hurt anyones feelings, as this was simply an oversight. I've gone back and read many of the previous posts on this website. Having seven brothers and sisters myself, I feel very much at home, reading posts from Mike's family. Hopefully, one of you will contact me. Tommy, I used to work at THE RED EAGLE SALOON on East Tremont, and I think I saw you peeking in the windows at Ruffles, across the street! LOL It's now called CASEYS, (The old Red Eagle), and owned by a friend of mine, Jimmy Corbett, also from a large Irish family. His brother Brian is a member of F.D.N.Y. Well, my heart goes out to all of you, especially family and close friends. I'm all ears if anyone wants to write me. Thanks, Lt. Joe McCarthy THE 343 House Southold, L.I.

Michael,
Thanks for the sign that I asked for. You guys sure didn't waste any time in getting back to me. There IS strength in numbers!
To Michaels family and friends:
I am, first and foremost, a father and husband. I'm also a Lt. in the SFD. Then, I am chairman of "THE 343 HOUSE", a NFP corp. started in the last year, to build or buy a large waterfront retreat house for the widows and children of our Hero Brothers. It is a large project, with a goal of 5 Million Dollars. There has been a tremendous amount of effort given to this cause thus far, by both FDNY and Volunteer Firemen, Officers, and Chiefs. I have been in contact with several widows, Denise included, and have met with unbridled enthusiasm and support from many of them.
Last weekend, I took my 4 and 5 year old boys Matt and Jake, up to Vermont for the weekend, both to have some quality time and to give my wife a break. After They went to sleep on Saturday evening, I stepped outside the garage to gaze up at the Heavens, and to pray to God and to our Brothers. My prayer was simple. "Dear Jesus, and Dear Brothers;
There is a lot of work involved in this 343 HOUSE project. I'm giving it my all, and so are others. Is there any way that you could give me a sign, just a little something, to let me know that we are doing the right thing, and that you will help us to succeed?"
I prayed a little more to my Dad, who I lost in '97, but it just seems like yesterday. It was about then, that I felt that I should go back in the house, through the garage door that I exited. I turned around to start walking in, and something brought my eyes to look upward, where the wall meets the ceiling, in the unfinished garage. There, hanging on a wall stud, was an old Vermont license plate. The number? 3 4 3
I want to tell you, I got goosebumps real quick, and it wasn't from the cold. It was a message from Michael, and Mycah, Danny and Timmy, the rest of the 343 Crew, and God Himself.
Of this, I am sure,
So I will go forward with the highest degree of conviction, knowing that THE 343 HOUSE was meant to be.
Myself, Chief Phil Burns from Bklyn., FF Larry Naddeo from Queens, Mary Geraghty, widow of Chief Ed Geraghty, and another person, are on the Executive Board of Directors. We're making things happen, and you should be hearing more about us in the very near future. If you would like to assist us, please call me and I'll fill you in.
We have undertaken this project, so that our Brothers' lives will never be forgotten, and so that their widows and children may enjoy life a little, given time and space, and maybe even have some happy memories of visiting their House in Southold, THE 343 HOUSE.
Respectfully Submitted,
Lt. Joe McCarthy
